This is something I found in the Germen mod Forum and it workes really well to improve game performance. 

Important for everyone, especially with Windows 7 operating system. Deletes both files listed below.
TagesClient.dat
TagesClient.exe
These clients are for when the online play was being considered. If your computer connected to the Internet it is building in the background
It slows down the game tremendously.
